Long Beach: Once primarily a resort destination for the vacationing wealthy, Long Beach has evolved into an idyllic residential/beach community located 45 minutes by rail from the commerce and cultural centers of New York City. Long Beach is a barrier island situated in the southwest corner of Nassau County on the south shore of Long Island; an area often referred to as the "Gold Coast." It is one of only two cities on Long Island and features five miles of white, sandy beaches and an impressive 2.5-mile boardwalk. No home in Long Beach is more than a few hundred yards from the ocean as the city is only a 1/2 -mile wide at its widest point. The bay side of the community is lined with single-family homes and private docks. Waterfront homes can also be found in the Canals, man-made extensions dug to connect areas of Long Beach with the bay. Diverse housing options are available in Long Beach especially since much of the city is undergoing a renaissance of development. Out of a population of more than 35,000 residents, almost 5,000 students are served by the Long Beach Public Schools. East Elementary School was a recent co-champion among all New York State schools for "Excellence in Reading" and the middle school has five top award winners in the Long Island Science Congress competition.
